Willoughby Hedge, nr Mere, Wiltshire

This lovely formation appeared on the 5th of June in a field of green barley close to Mere in Wiltshire. It measures approximately 120ft and is an elaborate 10-fold star contained within a ring. It is, as yet, perhaps the most complex formation of the 2016 season.

The landscape surrounding this formation is littered with ancient tumuli and is not far form White Sheet Castle, a neolithic hill fort where crop circles have appeared before.

The number ten means ‘beyond number’. It is the first double-digit number, it therefore both completes the decad and simultaneously transcends it. It is one (unity) but at the next level, it also represents moving beyond the threshold into new beginnings, new realms, new paradigms.  Ten is not a particularly common number in crop circle design, but after a a series of formations in recent years containing nine (the number of threshold) and multiples thereof, it seems rather apt (even hopeful) that we should see it now. Geometry Gallery

As always seems to be the case, the geometry of this formation was surprising and novel. It contains two different 10-pointed stars – that when they combine create the very attractive shard-like shapes. These shard-like shapes have been seen in several other formations over the years, often a byproduct of the construction of certain stars.

However, it had a distinct similarity to another 10-fold formation at Chisbury Ring back in 2010 (see gallery below) in this 2016 formation the shards seems to have been integrated into the body of the formation, whereas in the Chisbury formation they were external to the body of the formation. It’s an interesting symbolic move, to have the shards integrated. Integration and moving beyond threshold (the meaning of the number 10) makes this a particularly interesting symbolic design.
