Etchilhamption (2), Wilts.

(Etchilhampton Hill)

Introduction: This crop circle was first reported on the 4th of July 2026. It is in a field of wheat and measures approximately 180ft in diameter.

Description: The design is tri-fold with three circles and a triangle, contained within a large ring.

This circle was particularly interesting. Researcher Peter van den Burg noticed that this circle was very similar in design to the circle cut out at Morgan’s Hill on June 15th – see left. Looking at what remained of the circle at Morgan’s Hill, you can see the three circles, with concentric rings. While it isn’t an exact match, there are definitely similarities. Notice that the circle at Etchilhampton has a containing ring, while at Morgan’s Hill this isn’t the case. Is the containing ring a statement of emphasis? It’s an interesting thought.

It is a fascinating fact that there have been a handful of times, that circles that have been cut or defaced by farmers, have gone on to be repeated in another field. Evidently, the communications must have been important?

Flight: We were able to fly this circle three days after its appearance and it was still in very good condition. You can enjoy Steve’s photography below, with additional images by Tomasz Kaczmarek. Thanks to Tomasz for allowing us to share his images on our website.

We are still fund-raising to fly this season, if you’d like to make a donation to our flight fund, you can do that here.

Visiting: Important: You will need permission from the farmer to enter this field. As far as we know there is no current permission to enter these circles. Please read our downloadable PDF about visiting the crop circles responsibly.

Location History: Etchilhampton has been a regular spot for crop circles for many years. The top of Etchilhampton Hill has a fantastic view of the surrounding countryside – its a great place for a skywatch!

Visiting the Circles? If you are thinking of visiting any crop circles this summer, please read our Visiting the Crop Circles section. It’s full of useful information and etiquette for visiting the countryside and the crop circles. Please remember that you should not enter any field without the express permission of the farmer.

Please Help to keep us Flying in 2026: We hope to take to the skies again in 2026 to record the circles that appear this summer. If you have enjoyed looking at our pictures and information please consider making a small donation to keep us flying. There are so few of us left regularly recording the circles it’s really important that we continue. And while some now use drones to record the circles, it is important that there are still images taken from aircraft where the best quality camera equipment can be used and images that include the broad vista of the landscape can be taken. This kind of photography is expensive and it gets harder with each passing year to raise the funds we need to continue our work, but if everyone who regularly looked at this website made a small donation we would meet the funds we need. You can make a donation here.

Waden Hill 2009

The formation at Morgan’s hill, that was cut out, found the first half of June, show remarkable resemblance to the current formation at Etchilhampton. From the photo (thank you Simon Young - see above), we can make out that it was possibly a nine fold design, with emphasis on a triangle of three ringed circles. Although the current incarnation is not strictly nine fold, it is my guess that the two are similar, with the addition of a ring around it. As if it was some protective barrier. This is not unprecedented. Back in 2009, a formation near Avebury was cut out. Not only did the cut out formation got an extensive repair job, but the original design was reproduced two weeks later, a stone’s throw away at Waden hill.

Even the dates are almost similar.

I think the reference to 2009 may have some meaning. For years, the number of circles per season has been declining. Statistics showed consistently the line would hit zero in 2024. We now know that this didn’t happen. In fact, last year showed an increase in numbers for the first time in many years. This year will continue to increase the number of circles.

I think 2009 was the year crop circle activity hit its peak in design quality and creativity, although the numbers already had been in decline for some years then. This year has shown a consistent increase in design quality, if you ask me. A tendency that started around 2020 I think. Are we looking at a crop circle renaissance? The coming years will tell.

For the moment we can enjoy what comes our way, and try to reproduce it on paper, if it so pleases you. Start with a hexagonal division of a circle, double that till twelve to find the ratio of the perimeter ring. Construct a series of three nested hexagrams along the axial lines. This will give you the central circle and the size of the six small circles on the central circle. We park the blue circle outside for a moment. This will be used later. Find the three larger circles by the tangent point of the next small circle on the central circle. Use these tangent points to find the three pairs of overlapping circles. Although they only extend outward visually, at this point they appear as eyes again. How these circles interact with each other can be used to find the concentric rings in the three larger parts.

This is the basic pattern. In the real formation however, the gaps between the flattened parts are quite distinct, leading to differences between inner- and outer radii of different parts. If we want our drawing to resemble the original a lit better we have to reproduce the ring in the central circle, and the blue circle to increase the radius of the six overlapping parts. Now all the flattened parts inside the ring are connected.
