Coneybury Henge, nr West Amesbury, Wilts.

Detail: This circle was reported on the 8th of July in a field of maturing wheat close between West Amesbury and Stonehenge. The crop circle sits almost on top of the site of an old Henge (long ploughed flat), by Coneybury Hill. Stonehenge can clearly be seen over the road and to the West, and the New King Barrows are immediately to the north. The formation measures approximately 150ft in diameter and is well-made with a crisp outline and smoothly laid interior. As far as we are aware no permission has been given to enter this field, so please do not enter this circle unless you have specific permission from the farmer.

Location: As mentioned above the circle sits right on top of a former Henge ‘Coneybury Henge’. The Henge was first excavated and then ploughed in sometimes on the 1800s and was recorded then as a disc barrow. In 1980 it was subject to a more modern investigation where the remains of post holes and a ditch and back were discovered, and its status was upgraded to Henge. You can read more here. The landscape around Stonehenge is covered in barrows and tumuli and always looks incredible and beautiful from the air.

Design & Symbolism: There can be little doubt this crop circle is the international symbol used to denote the presence of chemical weapons. Placed as it was, so close to Amesbury, it seemed that it was some kind of ‘comment'(?) on the recent discovery, injuries and death caused by a chemical weapon in the town of Amesbury. Because of this fact it is difficult to interpret it in any other way, it is however, unusual for the crop circles to make ‘comment’ of this kind, but not unheard of. The symbol itself was developed so as to have no other meaning than the one assigned to it, so as not to cause confusion. The three-fold design is similar to ones used for both radiation and biohazards (also three-fold in nature), making them of a kind. This circle is interesting because it’s pattern was designed to only have one meeting, in juxtaposition to the majority of crop circles which are open to many interpretations.

Come and meet us at our annual conference August 3rd – 5th in Devizes Wiltshire. We have three days of workshops and lectures – it’s a great place to immerse yourself in the subject and meet like-minded people! See here for more details.

Visiting the Circles? If you are thinking of visiting any crop circles this summer, please read our Visiting the Crop Circles section. It’s full of useful information and etiquette for visiting the countryside and the crop circles. Please remember that you should not enter any fields without the express permission of the farmer.

Please Help to keep us Flying in 2018: If you have enjoyed looking at our pictures and information please consider making a small donation to keep us flying. There are so few of us left regularly recording the circles it’s really important that we continue. And while some now use drones to record the circles, it is important that there are still images taken from aircraft where the best quality camera equipment can be used and images that include the broad vista of the landscape can be taken. This kind of photography is expensive and it gets harder with each passing year to raise the funds we need to continue our work, but if everyone who regularly looked at this website made a small donation we would meet the funds we need. You can make a donation here.
